He may have hung up his boots earlier this month, but retirement does not appear to have diminished the standing of Sam Warburton in rugby.

The former Wales and Lions captain has been named as the most influential Welshman in the sport by Rugby World magazine.

According to rankings published in the September edition, Warburton is 21st in a list of 50 of the most powerful people in rugby.

That puts him ahead of the other two Welshmen who made the cut - second row totem Alun Wyn Jones (38th) and Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Martyn Phillips (34th).

Wales coach Warren Gatland is six places behind Warburton in 21st and eight behind England counterpart Eddie Jones (19th), with the most influential person according to Rugby World being, perhaps unsurprisingly, World Rugby vice-chairman and former Argentina scrum-half Agustin Pichot.

Of Warburton, Rugby World states: "His impact in rugby won't blow away on the breeze simply because he's worn his boots in anger for the last time.

"This is a man who led Wales a record 49 times, captained the Lions on successive unbeaten tours and became one of the greatest flankers to play the game.

"As the son of a Londoner, he has strong English roots. He supports Spurs and got behind England on their World Cup winning trail in 2003.

"His background has helped defuse the excessive nationalism that can spring up in sport. Love your country but don't hate opponents - his attitude reflects that and it helps put him on the highest pedestal." Phillips meanwhile, is praised by the magazine for running the WRU in a 'transparent and prudent fashion' and for repairing a previously damaged relationship between the governing body and the regions.

Lock Jones is, according to the magazine, poised to fill the captaincy boots of Sam Warburton.

"The consistency of his performances is remarkable and he drives others to reach those same standards," it states.

As for Gatland, Rugby World believes his influence could grow after he vacates the Wales job.

It's summary states: "When Gatland steps down as Wales coach after next year's World Cup,

he won't leave behind a hole to fill, he'll leave a veritable crater."

George North prepares to return after five-year absence

When one past Ospreys signing turned up for his first media session after arriving at the Liberty, he admitted to having studied the spectacular mural on a wall in the Sony Suite at Llandarcy, a work of art that captured the deeds of great players who had spurred the region forward in their first decade. “I’ve seen all the names and faces on that wall and it would be huge if I could follow them and leave a legacy,” he said.
Sadly, his image never made the mural.
It wasn’t totally his fault. The Ospreys no longer had the all-round firepower to challenge for trophies and the chap in question, an excellent player, was hit by injuries. He eventually left without fanfare.
The tale underlines there are no guarantees for any new signing.

He is the type of signing the region used to make as a matter of course, a marquee player to excite fans and give the team an extra dimension. Justin Marshall was recruited in 2006, Marty Holah the following year, Tommy Bowe the season after that and Jerry Collins came in during 2009, with every one of those a success.
Marshall gave the Ospreys belief and encouraged already good players to feel they could be better; Holah delivered grit and world-class excellence week-in, week-out; Bowe contributed lethal opportunism and tries, lots of them; and Collins supplied unbreakable resolve and immense power.
It is a different world at the Ospreys today, of course.
But class always counts and North’s goal will be to make a difference.

Is such a thing imaginable?
Head coach Allen Clarke said: “Wings pride themselves on scoring tries and I am sure George is no different in that respect.
“But he also has an all-round game that is going to help us.
“The challenge for us as a team is to get him on the ball during matches and give him opportunities to show what a good player he is.
“We have to remember, too, that it’s a team game and we need everyone to be firing.
“That said, we are hugely excited about having George in our squad. He is an exceptional player who has already achieved so much. Any side would want to have him on their books.”

Shane Williams scores against the Dragons If the Ospreys can get North playing to potential, they will be on their way.
His defence has been criticised, but he can be devastating in attack, never more so than against Ireland in the Six Nations in 2017. That night North ripped apart one of the best defences in world rugby with five clean breaks, eight defenders beaten and two tries.
Not even Joe Schmidt could nullify the 6ft 4in, 17st 5lb wideman.
Schmidt is arguably the most meticulous coach in the game, a man who stays up until the early hours and rises before dawn to watch matches back on tape and give his side an extra edge. But in that match the only way to counter North would have been to shell him and then send in the infantry.

The Ospreys will look to the midfield triangle of Sam Davies, Owen Watkin and Scott Williams to create chances for their new Lion out wide. If backs coach Matt Sherratt can ignite the potential of that trio — and he will need the Ospreys pack to deliver — the possibilities are considerable.
Is there scope to improve North?
“The day a player or coach feels he is the finished article is the day he should get out of the game,” said Clarke.
“If myself, Brad Davies, Matt Sherratt, our strength and conditioning team and everyone else didn’t feel we could put packages together to improve players then we shouldn’t be in our positions.
“All of us can get better.”
The Ospreys will hope the acquisition of North captures the imagination of their support base. “He has tremendous appeal in world rugby and represents much of what’s good about Wales,” said Clarke.
“Considering all he’s achieved at such a young age, he’s very grounded and his modesty is admirable.
“So I think he will prove popular with everyone.
“We are looking forward to seeing how he and all our other new players fit in.”

North will be used primarily as a wing.
Warren Gatland has said he’d like to see North deployed at times in the centre by his new region.
While they don’t rule that option out, the Ospreys have signed him to play out wide.
“George was recruited as a wing,” said Clarke.
“He can play in the centre and it may be that we move people around at times, with the aim of manipulating our attack.
“But we are looking at him mainly to play out wide.”

Ospreys head coach Allen Clarke Some will feel it is a big ask for North to come close to matching the achievements of wing legends Bowe and Williams at the Ospreys.
But he is no ordinary player.
He is someone capable of lifting his game to great heights.

It would be a surprise if his image doesn’t appear on any future murals at the Ospreys.

Great Start to The 6 Nations 2020 Campaign

Wales Beat Italy 42-0

Wales began the defence of their Six Nations title with a bonus-point 42-0 victory over Italy in Cardiff.
Wales scored five tries, including a hat-trick from Josh Adams, to give new head coach Wayne Pivac the perfect start.
Wales made a strong start to their defence of the Six Nations title by beating Italy 42-0 at the Principality Stadium.
It proved an impressive Six Nations bow for new Wales head coach Wayne Pivac as his team triumphed in bonus-point fashion.
Wing Josh Adams, World Cup top try-scorer earlier this season, led the way by scoring a hat-trick, including two in 12 first-half minutes, and Saracens centre Nick Tompkins claimed a sparkling solo try on his Test debut.
Fly-half Dan Biggar, who delivered an outrageous scoring pass for Adams' second try by flicking the ball at pace through his legs, kicked three penalties and a conversion to put Wales 21 points clear by the interval.
Biggar also converted Tompkins' score for a 13-point haul, although it took Wales until the 77th minute to claim an all-important fourth try when George North crossed and Leigh Halfpenny converted, before Halfpenny added the extras after Adams completed a treble.
For outclassed Italy, it was a 23rd successive Six Nations loss, and their next game is against France in Paris.
Pivac handed a Test debut to New Zealand-born Scarlets wing Johnny McNicholl, while number eight Taulupe Faletau made a first Wales appearance in almost two years and there were places on the bench for Tompkins and scrum-half Rhys Webb.
Italy, without a Six Nations win since beating Scotland at Murrayfield in 2015, included Gloucester pair Callum Braley and Jake Polledri, and Benetton lock Niccolo Cannone won his first cap.
Wales made a bright start, gaining promising early territory on the back of a break by scrum-half Tomos Williams, and Biggar opened their account through a third-minute penalty.
Biggar doubled the advantage with another penalty eight minutes later, before Tompkins replaced McNicholl while he underwent a head injury assessment.
Italy were pinned back by some aggressive Wales running, with Williams injecting a real snap to Wales' attacking game, and Biggar completed his penalty hat-trick after just 15 minutes.
Pivac could not have wished for a more committed opening by his team, and they ended a dominant opening quarter by scoring the first try of this season's championship.
It was all down to speed of ball as Wales whipped possession wide, Halfpenny cut a decisive attacking line and Adams sped over before McNicholl rejoined the action.
Italy were behind the eight-ball, and Wales struck again 10 minutes before half-time as Adams claimed his second try following Biggar's cheeky assist.
The fly-half also converted, continuing a virtuoso contribution, as Wales opened up en emphatic advantage and promised more misery for Italy in the second period.
Italy, though, dominated the early stages of the second-half, keeping possession and patiently building phases as Pivac made a double change, sending on Tompkins for Hadleigh Parkes and Ross Moriarty, who replaced Faletau.
The Azzurri could not break down Wales' defence, but it proved a frustrating spell for the home side as they looked to complete the job and collect a five-point maximum.
Further reinforcements arrived off the Wales bench in prop Rob Evans and lock Cory Hill, yet it proved a third quarter to forget from a Welsh perspective after proving unable to increase their lead.
But normal service was resumed when Hill charged clear in midfield and Tompkins finished brilliantly from 40 metres, making it an occasion to savour for the newcomer, and Biggar's conversion.
A fourth try should have arrived just five minutes later when North sprinted clear, but the score was ruled out after video replays revealed a Tompkins knock-on.
Webb had joined the action by this stage for a first Wales appearance since December 2017, and North ensured a bonus point by scoring his 40th Wales try to move equal-second alongside Gareth Thomas on Wales' all-time list.
